In Punta Mita, you can grab a mountain bike, saddle up a horse and head into the lush jungle and ranch lands, or have a guide take you out to fish for mahi-mahi from an open-bow panga. The snorkelling and diving at the Maritas Islands is on the must-do lists for activities along the Nayarit Riviera, as is the kayaking, whale watching, surfing, and sailing on the azure-coloured waters. Take a local charter and experience the thrill of some of the best sports fishing in the world. Punta Mita is home to trophy-sized black, blue, and striped marlin, yellow fin tuna, sailfish, dorado, rooster fish and more. The Marietas Island Marine Reserve's craggy, wild grass-swept national park has blue-footed boobies as its most famous residents. Numbering in the thousands, these odd birds are not only known for their bright blue feet, but for their laser like dives from great heights straight into the water.
Humpback whales are also sighted off Punta Mita during the months of December through April. Once hunted to the brink of extinction; humpbacks are slowly increasing in numbers.
Just outside the gated community of Punta Mita is a charming village - the original settlement, which has been a port since as far back as 2,000 BC. You can learn all about the history of Punta Mita's village at the Cultural Centre located at the main level of The Four Seasons resort. The Cultural Centre offers one-hour lectures on Punta Mita's ancient civilisation, The Huichol, art history, architecture, Mexican clothing design - past and present and local flora and fauna. Tequila and Mexican cuisine lectures are followed by tastings, and free Spanish lessons are offered to the resort's guests. The boutiques in the resort area carry many items made by local designers and artists.
